Mega RV: The Art Of Selling Class B's
In late 2000, Brent McMahon, president of Mega RV Corp., Irvine, CA, decided to parlay 14 years of RV sales and management experience into opening McMahon’s RV. McMahon, 40, established his dealership at Traveland USA, an Irvine RV mall 40 miles south of Los Angeles occupied currently by 11 other dealers.
In April McMahon’s RV dealership, which employs 35 people, expanded to a second store at a similar location - American RV Expo - in Colton, CA.
Although McMahon RV sells Class A motorhomes, travel trailers and fifth-wheels, 60% of his business is in the much smaller Roadtrek, Pleasure-Way, Chinook, Starflyte, Leisure Travel, Kodiak, Great West and BT Cruiser Class B van campers.
After first-year sales in 2001 of about $6 million, revenue for 2002 was expected to top $22 million; McMahon said Mega RV Corp. currently is the No.1 dealer in the country for Roadtrek. and Pleasure-Way.
RVB: You established both of your locations in RV malls. Why? McMahon: If you look at the trend in the auto industry, many dealerships have gone into auto malls - at least in California and in the West. There is strength in numbers there. People can come to the facility and have a large assortment of units available to look at. But they can make a decision in one day because they don't have to drive all over the place looking at different products. RVB: How does selling Class B van campers differ from selling other motorhomes and towables? McMahon: When novices come onto the lot, they look at a Class A and then at a Class B and they wonder what a Class B offers when it still costs $65,000. What we try to explain to people is the value they get out of the investment. People who buy vans take them on weekend trips andare able to keep them closer to home so they can drive to work or to the soccer game after school. People who buy a van get more use from their unit for the money. Class A's often have to go into storage, you have to plan trips to use them, and it doesn't serve very well as a second vehicle |
RVB: How has the camper van market changed? McMahon: When I first started selling the B products, most of our customers were between 65 and 80 years old. As time has gone by, we have kept that customer base. But what has come into the demographic is the Baby Boomer and some people younger than that who are looking for something other than an SUV. RVB: How do they differ as buyers? McMahon: Most of the B buyers are more sophisticated. They take their time and you really have to earn their business. I liken them to the high-end auto buyer. They do a lot of research, and they spend a little more time with the purchase.
McMahon: With the Class B, there is a little less of it. Most of them don't have slideout rooms and hydraulic jacks and those kinds of things. Servicing a Class B is more like servicing a car. There may be a generator or a heater, but there aren't as many things that can go wrong. And if something needs to be repaired, it's going to turn around a little quicker. |
